Otago Champs Success Despite the Weather

12 Dec

The Meridian Otago Champs were held at Lake Ruataniwha on the 9th and 10th of December and was the first regatta of the season due to the Clyde regatta being blown off the weekend before. The weather was, once again, not on our side and we had a bit of wind and rain that affected the flow of the regatta.

Sam Pearce teamed up with Logan Docherty from Oamaru in a new combination in the under 17 boys double scull and won their heat with the fastest qualifying time and later went on to come second in their final in a wind-affected shortened course of 1000 metres.

In the Under 17 boys single, Sam  won his heat with the second fastest time of all the heats but the final was not raced due to lack of time on the Sunday afternoon.

The head winds made the girls under 17 and under 18 single scull races tough with only Peta McKay making it through to the final of the Under 18 event which, again, was on a shortened 1 km course to finish 5th.

The girls under 16 quad including Sammy Harry, Rata Horan, Sophie Fenn and Sophie Hodgkiss-Blyth (who has been rowing for only 2 months!) had a fantastic row in the girls under 16 quad to finish a very credible 3rd. Rata and Sammy went on to compete in their under 16 double scull and did really well in a head wind and shortened 1 km course to come 3rd in that race.

Maggie Stiven fought hard in her Club single scull heat to come third but only the first two would go through to the final.

The regatta finished on a strong note for Wanaka with the girls under 17 double sculls where the combination of Maggie Stiven and Jordan Fox came second in their heat and Peta McKay and Greer Porter came 3rd, meaning both crews qualified for the final which unfortunately was cancelled due to lack of time.

The regatta was a good benchmark for the older crews to establish where they are in terms of fitness and competition and a great experience for the younger crews to learn how to deal with trying conditions and disrupted race programmes. We keep training now until our next regatta in January.
