Fourth place for Rata Horan (15) in the girls under 17 singles event at this weekends R2K Regatta at at Lake Ruataniwha.

Rata Horan (15) raced in the Under 17 single scull event at the R2K regatta at Lake Ruataniwha on Saturday.

It was the first race of the season with overall entries for the whole event up on previous years and 23 girls entered in the Under 17 girls single.

With a very slight breeze and flat water, the race conditions were perfect, making for good competition.

Rata was second in her heat, with the fourth fastest time overall taking her to the final.

In the final, Shakira Mirfin from Southland, winner of the under 16 singles at this years Maadi Cup, led the field easily with clear water and won in a time of in 8.32.  The next three scullers had a really close race and it could have been any one of them over the line in second. Hannah Cunningham of Oamaru College just edged away to second place, with Sharni Ross and Rata over the line in what was almost a photo finish in a time of 8.59.58 and 8.59.90, with Rata having to settle for 4th place and the rest of the field a small gap away.

Rata was 6th in the A Final of the Under 16 Singles at the Maadi Cup Regatta in March and won a Silver Medal at the South Island Secondary Schools Regatta in the Under 16 Singles in February. After some hard winter training and being part of the Central Otago Winter Development Squad, she is now working hard with coach Rob Bruce to better those results this season.

Well done Rata and good luck for the season ahead.
