Wanaka Rowing Club Annual Awards and Boat Naming Ceremony

21 May
Wanaka Rowing Club’s members and supporters gathered at The Upper Clutha Rugby Club Rooms last Friday evening for their Annual Awards and to name their lightweight quad.
The new quad was named  “Landmark Homes” after it’s main sponsor “Landmark Homes Central Otago”owned by Andy Lawrence. Andy, a former rower, was unable to make the ceremony but fittingly his parents Graham and Christine Lawrence attended to christen the new boat. His father Graham won a silver medal in the coxless pair in the 1962 Commonwealth Games in Perth.

The club would also like to thank the other sponsors who made the purchase of the new boat possible – Dean Bartley of New World Wanaka – Foodstuffs, The Lion Foundation, Sky City Community Trust and the New Zealand Community Trust. (Pictured are Graham and Christine with the boat)

In the annual awards the club recognised it’s top rowers and thanked supporters, parents and coaches for their support in what has been one of the most successful seasons for overall results for the club.
Rata Horan, 15, took home the The Tony Wellman Electrical Trophy for “Rower of the Year”after a tremendous season in her second year of rowing. She won a Silver Medal at the South Island Secondary Schools Regatta and was 6th in the A final at the National Schools Regatta in the Under 16 singles.
