Seagulls, Sculling and Smiles – Oreti Regatta, Invercargill

Eight Masters represented Wanaka Rowing Club at Saturday’s Oreti Regatta, hosted by Invercargill Clubs. Tide and wind allowed the full schedule to be completed on Saturday morning and Wanaka crews put up a strong performance against Invercargill, Waihopai, Port Chalmers, and Whakatipu.

Wanaka rower Shane Gibson took out the Mens Single Sculls convincingly, secured another first in the Mixed Double Sculls with Elizabeth Lampen Smith and again in the Mens Double Sculls with Chelsea Lodge, and then took third place in the Mens Quad with crew-mates Chris Menzies, Elizabeth Lampen Smith and Max Paulin.

Wanaka Womens Double scull partnership of Lizzie Ritchie and Sandra Read finished  strongly in first.

And Wanaka womens quad of Lizzie Ritchie, Sandra Binney, Sandra Read and Jo Underwood took fourth in their race.

Meanwhile back at the Wanaka Rowing Shed, Junior Crews are training hard under Head Coach Rob Bruce for the upcoming South Island Secondary School Regatta on March 6th,  followed two weeks later by the culmination of the junior season, the Maadi Cup. Both events take place on Lake Ruataniwha, Twizel. To fundraise for Maadi Cup junior crews are running a silent auction and firewood raffle. There are some great prizes kindly donated by local businesses and if you’d like to bid in the auction and support our Junior rowers please go to Wanaka Rowing Facebook Page or visit
