Our Latest Results: South Island Rowing Championships, South Island Secondary School regatta and the Nationals Secondary school regatta – Maadi Cup

2014 has been an exciting year for our talented rowers.

The South Island Rowing Championships saw success for club from Riley Bruce in the Under 17 and Men’s club grade.  Riley won both events despite both events being above his age category.  A stunning result.  There was more success when Nathan Redai and Riley won the Under 16 double scull  with an incredible 12 second lead.  Nathan also had an individual triumph, narrowly missing placing first in the Under 16 single event – his best individual effort to date.  The Under 16 girls squad also raced well by improving on previous performances.   Olivia Pearce and Helena Crawford finished 4th in the B final and Maddie Ball and Bridie Hurley were placed seventh.  It was pleasing for the club to boast a three gold and one silver medal haul at this competitive event.

The South Island Secondary School regatta also saw excellent results.  Again Riley gathered a number of medals including a win in the under 16 and 17 single races. And again, Nathan and Riley won the Under 16 double and lead continuously throughout the race.  Other results included:  Nathan fifth in the under 16 singles, Olivia Pearce 4th in the under 16 B final and Olivia and Bridie Hurley winning their under 15 double B final.  The girls quad also had pleasing results:  Helena Crawford, Olivia Pearce, Bridie Hurley, Maddie Ball and coxswain Alex Mitchell rowed to 5th place in the B final.  The girls attributed their success to many hours of training and the discipline, focus and steering of Alex.

The National Secondary School championships – Maadi Cup, saw some fantastic results too.  Nathan and Riley continued their dominance in the doubles and won their under 16 A final race.  Riley won his under 16 A final and our under 16 coxed girls quad made the B finals. Other results were pleasing too:  Nathan Redai made the A Final for the under 16 single and Olivia Pearce and Bridie Hurley were 3rd in their double the C final.

The rowers and our head coach, Rob Bruce, have been working very hard over the past few months and it is fantastic to see the fruits of their labours!  We are a small club but as you can see from the results, we punch above our weight for results!!
